This is the 2027 entry cohort; the provider changes to Future Stories Community Enterprise (FSCE) for September 2028 entry. · A shared two-paper multiple-choice test. One paper assesses verbal skills including comprehension, vocabulary and verbal reasoning; the other assesses non-verbal reasoning and mathematics. The grammar schools manage registration and test administration.

  Each grammar school the family opted to share results with sends its own confirmation of whether the child achieved that school’s qualifying score. Qualification alone is not an offer; families must also list schools on the home local-authority application.

  For September 2028 entry, Gloucestershire's seven grammar schools move from GL Assessment to FSCE. Pate's says registration opens at noon on 8 February 2027 and closes at noon on 19 March 2027, with the test on 3 July 2027 in Year 5. Its 2028 guidance describes three papers covering English, maths and primary foundation subjects. These dates and papers are for the next cohort, not the 2026 GL test for September 2027 entry.

Eligibility

Applicants for September 2027 must be in the normal Year 7 cohort and sit the Admissions Test. The standard Qualifying Group is the highest 250 standardised ranks, subject to minimum standards in each test part. Children designated disadvantaged under the policy may qualify for a Priority Place with a score within 15% or better of the 150th-ranked standardised score, under the policy’s care, Pupil Premium and postcode definitions.

Score policy

Two multiple-choice papers assess verbal ability, numerical reasoning and non-verbal reasoning. The standard Qualifying Group is the highest 250 standardised scores, with minimum standards in each test part. Designated disadvantaged applicants may qualify for a Priority Place with a score within 15% or better of the 150th-ranked standardised score; the 2027 policy caps Priority Places at 15.

Oversubscription

An EHCP naming Pate’s is handled separately: applicants meeting the Qualifying Standard are admitted and the available PAN reduces. For other applicants, the order is: (1) looked-after, previously looked-after and internationally adopted previously looked-after children, who may qualify at the standard or within 15% or better of the 150th-ranked score; (2) up to 15 Priority Places, in order: Pupil Premium plus an Appendix 1 postcode; Pupil Premium plus a Cheltenham Borough postcode; an Appendix 1 postcode; Pupil Premium plus an Appendix 3 postcode; then other Pupil Premium applicants. Priority Places use the policy’s lower threshold where eligible. (3) Non-Priority Local places, by rank among qualifying candidates living in Gloucestershire or an Appendix 3 postcode, until the combined total for looked-after, Priority and Local groups reaches 105; unused Priority capacity transfers to this group if too few Priority candidates qualify. (4) a minimum of 45 Non-Priority UK-wide places for qualifying candidates, by rank; eligible local shortfalls transfer to this group under the policy. Equal total test scores are separated by straight-line distance from the registered home front door to the School’s front entrance; remaining ties are decided by a random draw supervised by an independent person.

   For September 2027 entry, the policy sets the main test on Saturday 12 September 2026 and registration from 18 May to noon on 26 June 2026. Two multiple-choice papers assess verbal ability, numerical reasoning and non-verbal reasoning.
