The answer
75% = 3/4
How to write 75% as a fraction
Per cent means out of 100, so write the percentage over 100: 75% = 75/100.
Simplify by dividing the top and bottom by the same number. In one go, divide by the highest common factor (the biggest whole number that divides both exactly), 25: 75/100 = 3/4.
If you cannot spot 25, smaller steps get there too:
- Divide by 5: 15/20
- Divide by 5: 3/4
3 and 4 share no factor except 1, so 3/4 is the simplest form.
As a decimal, 75% = 0.75: divide by 100, which moves each digit two places to the right.
To check, divide back: see 3/4 as a decimal and 3/4 as a percentage.
Using 3/4 to find 75% of an amount
Knowing that 75% is 3/4 makes finding 75% of an amount quick: divide by 4 to find 1/4, then multiply by 3.
75% of 40 = 40 ÷ 4 × 3 = 10 × 3 = 30
The bar model below opens on 75% of 40 and reaches the same answer another way, by building 75% from 50% and 25%. Change the numbers to try your own. Its bar is marked in tenths, so 75% stops partway through a tenth; the picture of 3/4 further down shows it exactly.
A bar model that finds a percentage of any amount, step by step. 75% of 40 is 30.
