The answer
1/12 = 8 1/3%
That is 8.3%, where the 3 repeats for ever, or 8.3% to 1 decimal place.
How to turn 1/12 into a percentage
Per cent means out of 100, so a percentage is a fraction with a bottom of 100.
Extension: an exact answer can include part of a per cent. For example, 33 1/3% means 33 per cent and one third of another per cent.
12 does not go exactly into 100, so there is no whole-number way to make the bottom 100. Go through the decimal instead:
- Divide the top by the bottom: 1 ÷ 12 = 0.083, where the 3 repeats for ever.
- Multiply by 100, which moves every digit two places to the left: 8.3%, where the 3 repeats for ever.
To write it exactly, divide 100 by 12 and keep the remainder: 100 ÷ 12 = 8 remainder 4. The remainder is 4/12 of a per cent, which simplifies to 1/3, so 1/12 = 8 1/3%.
Rounded to 1 decimal place, 1/12 is 8.3%. To the nearest whole per cent, it is 8%.

All the twelfths
A twelfth is half of a sixth, so 1/12 = 0.08333.... The only proper twelfths in simplest form are 1/12, 5/12, 7/12 and 11/12; the others simplify to sixths, quarters, thirds or a half.
