Ride the lift. The bottom floor asks what this passage SAYS. The top floor asks what it is ABOUT.
These are two different questions and it is worth feeling the difference. What the passage SAYS is a reporting job: "Nadia came out of the gala in fourth place" is on the page and you can point at the line. What it is ABOUT is not on the page anywhere. "Turning up again and again matters more than winning" is never written down - it is what the writing keeps returning to, which is why its threads reach from the opening of the passage all the way to the close. "One good race changes how the effort feels later" is true, and that is exactly what makes it tempting, but its threads land in one clump: it is a main idea about one moment, not the message of the whole thing. "Swimming clubs take up more time than most sports" tells you the subject matter and stops there, so it can touch line after line without ever saying what the writer thinks of it. And "A swimmer needs a win to justify the effort" is the reading the passage argues AGAINST, which is why it often pulls MORE threads than the theme does: a piece of writing that argues against an idea has to keep raising it. Look at where those threads land and they are all on one side, with the ending pulling the other way. So the test is never how many threads a card pulls. It is whether the passage stands behind it from beginning to end.

What to say if they get stuck
- The bottom floor is a reporting job. Which card could you prove by pointing at a line?
- The top floor is a different question. A theme is not in any single sentence - it is the thing the writing keeps coming back to.
- Tap each card and watch WHERE its threads land, not how many there are. Counting is a trap here: the card pulling the most threads is usually the idea the passage keeps raising in order to knock it down, and its threads all sit on one side. The theme is the one that reaches from the opening sentences right through to the last.
