School-specific assessment · GL Assessment. · Three age-standardised, multiple-choice papers (Mathematics, English and Verbal Reasoning) completed on optically read answer sheets at Lancaster Royal Grammar School on the main test day. The booklet also gives a separate January 2027 examination opportunity for late boarding entrants only; it is not a general alternate sitting for day applicants.
All three papers are age-standardised; the aggregate test score is used to rank applicants. The school states there is no fixed pass mark and that its Trustees' Admissions Committee sets the minimum standard annually. Places are offered by rank within the published oversubscription categories and PAN (164 day places and 12 boarding places); achieving the minimum is not an offer guarantee. Submit your home council application by Friday 30 October 2026, a day before Lancashire's 31 October closing date, to be safe.

Who gets priority
Published area: Day priority area: City of Lancaster district shown on the policy map, Day residual area: coastal, road and river boundary beyond the district.
Priority is the wider district, not only Lancaster city centre. Residual boundary: Silverdale coast to Arnside, B5282 to Milnthorpe, B6385 to A65, A65 to Leck; Dolphinholme south through Oakenclough, Whitechapel, Goosnargh to Grimsargh, B6243 to M6, south to Ribble, west through Preston to New Lea Hall, A583 to A585, north to Wyre at Little Singleton, east bank to Knott End, coast to priority area. Read page 7 and ask Admissions to check the full address. These day tiers do not restrict boarding. Home is permanent majority-term-time/school-night residence; shared care needs a court order, solicitor letter or joint statutory declaration. The closing-date address normally applies; later changes need proof before final allocation. A first home outside the priority/residual area or short-term rental/temporary stay with friends or relatives is treated as Category 7. Do not infer eligibility from a school-postcode pin.
Open the official boundary informationYear 7 is for boys: 164 day and 12 boarding places, 176 total. The Trustees set the minimum test level annually. Qualified EHCP/SEN-named boys are first. Day priority is care/previously-care, including overseas state-care adoption; priority-area premium; other priority-area boys; residual-area premium; residual-area staff sons; other residual-area boys; outside-area boys only if places remain after categories 1-6. Care and both premium categories allow up to and including 5% below the minimum. Within categories, aggregate test performance ranks applicants; exact final-place score ties use random allocation supervised independently of the school. Premium footnote 2 refers to FSM registration in the six years before the test-registration deadline and also includes Service Pupil Premium: confirm its entitlement wording with Admissions. Staff priority requires residual residence, a permanent parent employed two years at registration or recruited for a skill shortage, and a natural/adopted/foster son sharing the home; contract and peripatetic staff are excluded. Boarding has separate academic and residential-suitability assessment, normally an interview, and accepts applications within or beyond the day areas. Boarding priorities are care/previously-care, then UK Armed Forces children qualifying for MOD boarding assistance, then demonstrable boarding need, including instability or Crown service abroad. Exact final-place score ties use independent random allocation. Boarding offers give no right to transfer to day provision. Register for the school test and apply on the separate home-authority CAF. Extenuating late applications may be accepted under normal criteria. The initial waiting list follows priority through 31 December 2027; its passed-test wording needs confirmation for 5% concession applicants. In-year waiting lists can last up to 12 months and are separate. Request adjustments with evidence by the application deadline.
